Abstract

Introduction: Controlling chronic illness requires the person to develop skills in self-management of the therapeutic
regimen, and nurses play a significant role in empowering self-care. The meaning(s) attributed by the person to the disease
and treatment regimen are personal conditions that impact the health-disease transition process and, consequently, the
process of self-management of the therapeutic regimen. Facilitating this transition process is the core of nurses' actions.
Objective: To map nursing knowledge regarding the meanings attributed to self-management of the medication regimen.
Material and Methods: Scoping review, following the JBI methodology. A search was performed on databases CINAHL
Complete, CINAHL Plus with Full text, and MEDLINE through EBSCOHOST; Web of Science; OVID; and SCOPUS. Inclusion
criteria were publications in English, Portuguese or Spanish, adult participants, any care setting, and no restriction on the
type of studies and time frame. Results: A total of 260 articles are included in the scoping review. Regarding the meanings
attributed to the medication regimen, three categories emerged: hindering meanings attributed to the regimen (e.g.,
devaluation; shame), facilitating meanings attributed to the regimen (e.g., efficacy; maintaining life), and hindering
meanings attributed to the medication administration route (e.g., painful/uncomfortable intaking). Conclusion: The
results of this scoping review are a valuable contribution to representing nursing knowledge in self-management of the
medication regimen. Supporting clients to (re)structure hindering meanings points to a very relevant therapeutic nursing
approach in this area of care
