Introduction: The competence of the Clinical Nursing Supervisor is fundamental to the success of nurses' training. Objectives, Material and Methods: Two studies were developed: Study 1, methodological, with the objective of constructing and validating an assessment scale of characteristics and competencies of the Clinical Supervisor in Nursing. Subsequently, Study 2, correlational-explanatory, was developed, aiming to analyse the influence of biographical variables and educational level of students on the Nursing Degree Course, on the importance attributed by them to the characteristics and competencies of the Clinical Supervisor in Nursing. The quantitative data were treated using descriptive and inferential statistics and the
qualitative data that emerged from the open question attached to the scale, through categorical content analysis. Results
and Discussion: From the final version of the scale, three main components were extracted, obtaining a robust and reliable
instrument with good internal consistency. From the categorical content analysis, five categories emerged: Individual
characteristics, Organization skills and adaptation to the context; Relational and pedagogical skills; Communication skills and
technical-scientific skills. Of the main results of Study 2, the importance attributed by students to the characteristics and skills
of the Clinical Nursing Supervisor being influenced by gender and the completion of clinical teaching II and III stands out.
Conclusion: This study contributed to defining the profile of the Clinical Supervisor in Nursing. The constructed scale is valid
and can be applied and developed in future investigations.
