Abstract

Introduction: Chronic diseases have a permanent nature, implying changes in health condition and requiring continuous management from the individual. When people are challenged to adopt and maintain self-management behaviours for their disease and therapeutic regimen, they need to mobilize a set of resources, particularly internal ones. Knowledge for managing the health condition, which involves self-managing a specific medication regimen, appears to facilitate the self-management process. Therefore, one of the challenges for nurses is to identify the content of this knowledge that is relevant for facilitating the adaptation process for individuals with chronic diseases. Objective: To map nursing knowledge related to the contents associated with the self-management of medication regimens. Material and Methods: A scoping review was conducted following the JBI method. The search was performed on databases CINAHL Complete, CINAHL Plus with Full Text, MEDLINE via EBSCOHOST, Web of Science, OVID, and SCOPUS. Publications in English, Portuguese, or Spanish were included, involving adult participants in any care context, with no restrictions on study type or publication period. Results: From the analysis of the articles included in the "corpus of analysis," three categories of knowledge-related data emerged: I) knowledge about medication regimens; II) knowledge about self-management of medication regimens; and III) knowledge about self-monitoring of medication effects. Conclusion: The mapped content can guide the process of care design, both in assessing care needs and in the specificity of nursing intervention content.
