Abstract

Abstract: Introduction: Population ageing and the increase in chronic and terminal illnesses elevate the need for palliative care, where informal caregivers play an essential role, often without adequate support or preparation. Objectives: To assess the impact of a training program for informal caregivers of palliative care patients, aiming to improve their practical, emotional, and relational skills, as well as to reduce the burden associated with caregiving. Material and Methods: Quantitative observational study with descriptive and correlational analysis. The sample included 30 informal caregivers of palliative care patients. The intervention consisted of three home sessions focused on practical skills and emotional support. The Palliative Care Capacity Scale (PCCS) and the Zarit Burden Interview were applied to measure capacity and burden before and after the intervention. Results: The intervention resulted in significant improvements in the practical, emotional, and relational dimensions of the PCCS and a significant reduction in caregivers' burden measured by the Zarit scale (p<0.001). Conclusions: The training program proved to be effective in empowering informal caregivers, contributing to a reduction in burden and an improvement in essential skills for the care of palliative patients.
