Abstract

Introduction: Clinical Supervision in Nursing aims to develop personal and professional skills, support nurses and contribute to improving the quality and safety of care and is significant in consolidating professional identity. The clinical supervisor plays a fundamental role in the development of rehabilitation nurses and in improving the quality of the care they provide. According to several authors, nurses should receive adequate training to fulfil the role of clinical supervisor. Objectives: To analyse the perceptions of specialist rehabilitation nurses about the role and competences of the clinical supervisor in the field of rehabilitation nursing. Material and Methods: Qualitative, exploratory, descriptive study. Sample: 10 nurses specialising in rehabilitation nursing from different institutions in mainland Portugal. Data collection: semi-structured interview. Data processing: content analysis according to Bardin. The study received a favourable opinion from the Ethics Committee of the Nursing School of Porto. Results: The characteristics and competences of the supervisor were considered relevant to the success of the supervisory process and were seen as facilitating learning. Supervision strategies should be adopted in complementarity and as a structuring axis of the teaching and learning process in Rehabilitation Nursing. Conclusions: The Rehabilitation Nursing Specialists considered the intervention of the clinical supervisor to be significant for the development of the supervisee, facilitating and relevant to increasing professional competences and reducing anxiety. Clinical supervisors must have knowledge, intervention skills and a proactive attitude.
