Introduction: “Domestic violence” is defined as any behaviour, or lack thereof, that inflicts suffering. Performed directly or indirectly, with or without intention, by any means in relation to another family member. Objective: To describe the decision-making process in nursing, in view of the needs of a client with dementia, a victim of violence. Methodology: An exploratory-descriptive case study (in an academic context), regarding the application of an intervention program, in a community context, to a client with dementia, a victim of violence. Results and Discussion: An 82-year-old woman, retired, married, mother of two children. Followed in a community context for depression. After assessment, it is suggestive of dementia, she is independent in Instrumental Activities of Daily Living [IAVIDs], although she presents slight dependence to perform Activities of Daily Living [ADLs]. Compromise of the marital relationship due to conflict and violence between both. The collaborative intervention included different strategies aimed at the client and the family. Conclusion: Elder abuse is underreported, highlighting its importance. Elderly women are reluctant to ask for help and normalize abuse by their spouses. Therefore, the importance of the intervention of the Specialist Nurse in Mental Health and Psychiatric is highlighted, periodically reassessing the conditions of fragility of the elderly, the support network and the help-seeking behaviour, as well as signalling to the Adult Violence Prevention Teams. Protective interventions from childhood are crucial, promoting self-esteem and coping skills.
